Best Place to Create a Limit Order in 2026: DEX vs CEX Compared

best place to create a limit order

For most onchain traders, a DEX is the best place to create a limit order: your tokens stay in your own wallet, and you can set a price on tokens that trade onchain. A centralized exchange (CEX) is the better place when your funds already sit on the exchange and you trade major listed pairs.

Both let you set a price and wait. They differ in who holds your funds, what you pay, which tokens you can trade and how your order gets filled.

How Does a Limit Order Work on a CEX vs a DEX?

On a CEX, the exchange matches your order inside its own order book. On a DEX, you sign the order from your wallet, and a taker settles it on-chain when the price is reached.

On a Centralized Exchange

You deposit funds to the exchange, then place a limit order in its order book. The exchange’s matching engine fills it against other users’ orders when the price meets your limit.

Everything happens inside the exchange’s own system. Your funds are held by the exchange until you withdraw them.

On a DEX

A DEX has no custodian holding your funds. On KyberSwap, you create a Limit Order by signing it with your wallet, not by sending a transaction. Your tokens stay in your wallet until the order settles.

When the market reaches your rate, a taker fills the order and settles it on-chain. Open orders can be filled by anyone, including the KyberSwap Aggregator, so swaps via the Aggregator will also be routed through active limit orders when the rate is competitive.

DEX vs CEX Limit Orders Compared

The biggest differences between DEX and CEX limit orders are custody, what you pay and which tokens you can trade.

Fees

On a CEX, a limit order that rests in the order book usually pays the maker fee. Rates vary by exchange and volume tier. Binance.US, for example, charges 0% maker and 0.02% taker on its spot trading pairs.

On KyberSwap, the maker pays no fee to create or fill a Limit Order. The taker pays the gas fee and the taker fee, which ranges from 0.01% to 1% depending on the volatility level of the tokens.

Gas and Onchain Steps

A CEX trade itself costs no gas, but moving funds in and out of the exchange does. On KyberSwap, signing the order is gasless. Token approval and wrapping are on-chain transactions that require gas, and approval is skipped on subsequent orders.

Token Coverage

A CEX only lets you place limit orders on pairs it has listed. A KyberSwap Limit Order supports ERC20 tokens, and you can import tokens that are not listed yet.

Fill Price

On most CEXs, a limit order fills at your price or better. A KyberSwap Limit Order locks in a fixed rate when you sign it, so it fills at that rate even if the market moves further in your favor. To capture a better price, cancel and create a new order.

Where Can You Create a Limit Order in 2026?

You can create a limit order on most major centralized exchanges and on several DEXs and DEX aggregators.

Centralized Exchanges

Large exchanges such as Binance, Coinbase and Kraken all support limit orders on their spot markets. They also offer extra order types, such as stop-limit orders, and deep order books on major pairs.

The trade-off is the same across all of them: you trade from an exchange account, and only on the pairs that exchange lists.

DEXs and DEX Aggregators

On the DEX side, limit orders are available on platforms such as KyberSwap, 1inch, CoW Swap and Uniswap. They differ in chain coverage, how orders are filled and which order types they offer.

What Makes KyberSwap a Strong Place for Limit Orders

KyberSwap Limit Orders are a liquidity source on the KyberSwap Aggregator. That means your order can be filled by takers browsing the order book and also by everyday swaps routed through the Aggregator when your rate is competitive.

You can also cancel without paying gas. Gasless Cancel can take up to 5 minutes if the order was recently shared with a taker, and Hard Cancel is available when you need instant cancellation.

Should You Use a DEX or a CEX for Limit Orders?

Use a DEX when you want to keep custody and trade onchain tokens. Use a CEX when your funds already sit on the exchange and you trade major listed pairs.

Choose a DEX When…

  • You want to keep custody. Your tokens stay in your own wallet until the order settles.
  • The token is not on a CEX. Many onchain tokens trade only on DEXs, and you can import tokens that are not listed yet.
  • Your funds are already onchain. Placing the order from your wallet avoids depositing to an exchange and withdrawing again.
  • You want to adjust orders often. On KyberSwap, creating an order and using Gasless Cancel do not require gas.

One caveat on Ethereum: the taker pays gas to settle a DEX limit order, so small orders on Ethereum are unlikely to fill unless the price moves enough to cover taker gas costs.

Choose a CEX When…

  • Your funds are already on the exchange. Moving them onchain first adds a withdrawal step.
  • You trade major pairs with fiat. CEXs connect directly to bank deposits and fiat currencies.
  • You need advanced order types. Stop-limit and similar orders are standard on most large exchanges.

How Do You Create a Limit Order on KyberSwap?

You create a Limit Order on KyberSwap in a few steps from the Swap page.

  1. Connect your wallet and select the network.
  2. Open the Limit Order tab on the Swap page.
  3. Choose the token pair and enter the amount to sell in the You Pay field.
  4. Set the price: enter a rate, a percentage relative to market, a preset, or select Market.
  5. Set the expiry. The order cancels automatically if it is unfilled by then.
  6. Click Review Order, then Place Order. For a native token such as ETH, the button reads Wrap & Place Order.
  7. Complete the processing steps: wrapping (native tokens only), token approval (first time per token) and signing the order.

Active orders appear in the Active Orders screen. Fully filled orders move to the Order History tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a DEX Limit Order Safer Than a CEX Limit Order?

Yes, in terms of custody. A DEX limit order keeps your tokens in your own wallet until the order settles. You are still responsible for your wallet’s security and for verifying the token contract before you trade.

Do I Pay Gas to Create a Limit Order on KyberSwap?

No. Signing the order does not require gas. Token approval, the first time for each token, and wrapping a native token are on-chain transactions that require gas.

Are My Funds Locked When I Place a Limit Order on a DEX?

No, not on KyberSwap. Your tokens stay in your wallet until the order settles. If your balance falls short at that point, the order fills only up to the available amount.

Can I Trade Tokens on a DEX That Are Not Listed on a CEX?

Yes. A KyberSwap Limit Order supports ERC20 tokens, and you can import custom tokens that meet the ERC20 standard.

Can a DEX Limit Order Be Partially Filled?

Yes. Some takers may fill only part of your order. A partially filled order shows a yellow progress bar under Active Orders.

Which Is the Best Place for Your Next Limit Order?

If your assets live in a self-custody wallet and you trade onchain tokens, a DEX is the best place for your limit order. On KyberSwap, you sign the order without gas, your tokens stay in your wallet, and your order can be filled through both the order book and the KyberSwap Aggregator.

If your funds already sit on an exchange, you trade major pairs against fiat, or you need advanced order types, a CEX is the more practical choice.

To place your first DEX limit order, open the Limit Order tab on the Swap page at KyberSwap, connect your wallet and set the rate you want to trade at.
